A Few Prognostications

Poetry

I’m not really prophet material,
but how do you know
if you don’t try…?
Right…?

(Lots of forced,
intensely preparatory
meditative breaths.)

(Some swearing in confused frustration.)

(And then…!)

A few early warning signs
Heaven on Earth
is about to pull
into the driveway:

The number of trumpet players
per capita
starts feeling like a metric
that can no longer be ignored.

It starts to make
intuitive sense
why everything
is so beautiful.

Professional sports teams
begin employing mimes
instead of traffic cops
to direct traffic after the game.
Then to make personnel decisions.

In quantum astronomy,
the realization that
the center of the Universe
is located at every point
where you take a measurement.

Being good enough
and being on time
go the way of the mastadon.
We don’t really know
how they went–
we just realize they’re gone.
And we can’t remember what it was like
when they were around.

Public transportation
is banned because
everyone realizes
how much they value
the opportunity
to ride around together.

When two people
of different religious persuasions
ride in an elevator together,
they find it shockingly pleasant.

The only secret left
is a flagrant violation
of the process of elimination.

You read this,
and you realize
you’re the Answer
to someone else’s Question.
And you don’t even
need to know whose.

        • Due to the willing and unbiased assistance of readily available reference materials, I know exactly what you mean, Hariod. That happened to me once, too.

          (That sentence is a beauty!)

      • Thanks Michael; you know me: if the words sound good, use ’em, and to hell with the meaning. And now, due to pressures of things to be read and then instantly misunderstood, I must absquatulate.

        • Hariod, I have to ask… was absquatulate intentional? That was my vocabulary word of 2014, and was written on the white board of my office for months, (just because… it’s so fun to say!), and perhaps I made that abundantly obvious here at some point. In which case, your memory and connection is received as one of those profound gifts of kindness previously described. And if not, it is received in the same way, only the Sender becomes a lot harder to pin down and we find ourselves interwoven once again by something inexplicably delightful… 🙂

          Much Love

      • The word ‘absquatulate’ has been at the top of my list of favourite words since I first came across it sometime in the 90’s Michael. I use it occasionally in an ironic way though never otherwise. What I mean is that I use it to confound humorously (as you say, it’s a funny word), and in a self-mocking kind of way – a sort of faux pretension. I am yet, ever, to have come across someone who knew what it meant – present company excepted – and find it to be an amazing coincidence that not only do you know of it, but that you regard the word similarly. A madness shared? H ❤

        • A madness shared, H. I came across the word reading Thomas Pynchon’s novel Against the Day last year– (a novel full of half-mocking caliginous vaticinations) (I’m just practicing to lock in the new ones)– and after looking it up, have kept it close ever since. I think you’ll be quite pleased to know there’s a very small office of power systems engineers demonstrating a significant departure from the average when it comes to the per capita comprehension of absquatulation.

  1. You seem to be channeling the higher realms when you spout poetry Michael.

    You read this,

    need to know whose.

This is simply beautiful. The divine must be using you as its faucet from which magnificence flows effortlessly…

    • For so long, not in an agonizing way but in more of a recurring, nagging way, I often felt there was something I wasn’t being, doing, becoming, realizing or recognizing– something awry. The presence of others such as yourself and the “recognition” you offer in response to the expressions offered here has reinforced the reality that all healing is accomplished together. Thank you.

      Peace through you as well,
      Michael

And why not? They would have something in common. That they both regard spirituality as important and both believe in God.

    • Hi Teresa, yes it should be easy for people of all faiths to nurture one another and benefit from genuine dialogue, or the shared, nearly silent hum of an elevator… I think open-hearted people of every faith do have this experience. It is the fundamentalism, I think, in all walks of life, that closes the door to dialogue and mutual appreciation. Thank you for reading and sharing here…

  5. Sorry I’m a bit late in getting here, fascinated by mime artists directing traffic and lost in the realization that ‘the center of the Universe is located at every point where you take a measurement.’ This piece is just so encouraging…

    • You’re right on time, Tiramit… 🙂 Being Good Enough and Being On Time left the station days ago… We don’t have to worry about them anymore… I’m glad you enjoyed it, and that encouragement is something you took away from it…

In gratitude for your presence here–
