Where Every Road Leads

Christ / Course Ideas / Science

I’m not so naive as to think I fully understand my own beliefs and feelings, nor to assume they form an exactly rational system when laid bare by attempts at explanation.  But in making the effort, I discover things– inconsistencies in thought, many of them delightful(!); powerful feelings that cannot be explained, yet explain much; ineffable inner realms I realize are part and parcel to who I am; or the existence of ideas operating one level deeper within me than the level I set out to explain.  I discover, or at least contact, who I am, and by extension, who we are.

As an example, consider this treasured, albeit potentially indefensible conviction I hold, that the world is quite capable of behaving in ways not reconcilable with the past.  Equivalently stated, I believe my library of personal experience is a woefully inadequate indicator of what exists within the landscape of the possible.  Both of these statements efforts to describe a feeling I have in my heart.  It is a feeling that beckons to me from the unknown.  It is a feeling that something very real exists, right now, but not yet fully within the present frame of manifest experience.

Is this crazy?

Then I am happy to be called such.

Feelings are powerful resonators, and they call forth ideas that seem capable of elaborating on their contents.  Giving these ideas life can quite often seem an impossible task, however, particularly when they represent departures from past precedent, and it is at this point in the chain reaction of creation and consequence that one reaches an impasse.  It is as if an uncrossable divide appears in our way.  How does one reach across the gap from one frame to the other, from what is felt to what is apparent?

* * * * *

When I was in college I discovered the ideas of John Keely.  To some, he was construed as a crackpot and a fraud.  To others he was a genius.  One premise latent in his work is that every structure in the universe– from the smallest particle to the greatest galaxy– participates in a dynamic flow of harmonious forces that may be “sprung open” at any point in space, just as a field of invisible white light is capable of being released into a rainbow of visible colors on its passage through a drop of water.  These forces, once released, seek ever to return to their natural state of hidden balance.  The Earth and the Sun, as examples, are like two drops of that water, fulcrums of power who each spring open the cosmic reservoir, releasing forces who flow continuously from each to each in their yearning for balance.  It is as if a limitless field of neutral magnetic potential were torn in two points, creating a pair of openings, and those two openings were linked to form a continuously flowing circuit.  Thus, through relationship and mutual arising, a dynamic, but seemingly stable form emerges.

So far the story sounds rather like an impressionist, nineteenth century rendition of electrodynamics, in which electrons are bound to the nucleus of atoms by passing the electromagnetic force back and forth.  One of Keely’s distinctions was that he felt the human being was also such a drop of water, and he came to realize that the human being could “awaken” these forces in earthen materials.  Two examples from stories surrounding Keely’s legacy will reveal what is meant by this.  In one story, Keely placed copper spheres at various points in his laboratory, and by preparing them in ways that remain beyond concise explanation, he was able to cause them to form a miniature “solar system”.  They floated in orderly circles through the air of his laboratory just as planets float through the space around the sun.  In a second example, he constructed a large copper sphere that he “geared” to the existing circuitry of the Earth and Sun.  When activated, the sphere would rotate, just as a planet does, and would do so regardless of resistance applied to it– e.g. leather straps linked to really heavy objects.  He is said to have intended to apply this invention to the rail system, eliminating the need for dangerous steam engines in trains.

The insight, the mojo in all of this is said to have been love– whatever that is…  Keely is said to have initiated his experiments by playing a violin and using music as a carrier of his heartfelt knowing-feeling.  To simplify– temporarily eschewing the notion that the stories are simply absurd, because the feeling I have would suggest this isn’t necessarily so– Keely’s legacy suggests that love can awaken relationship, causing new circuits to form in the natural world through which harmonizing forces will flow.  I found this idea nearly intoxicating, and still do.

* * * * *

At this earlier time in my life, roughly fifteen years ago, I participated in a group of roughly twenty to thirty persons– (at our peak, though at times we were just two or three)– who had come together in an effort to recreate this phenomenon.  We failed to reproduce any physical reenactments of these stories, but the particular mode of failure did not really dampen my feeling that far more is possible than history would suggest.

One thing I learned was that I needed a result too badly.  I was desperate, hungry, and splintered within.  I was, truth be told, as scared of success as I was of failure.  I thought I would be different if events went a particular way, and I now realize how deeply erroneous this type of thinking is, and was.  I sensed this inherent cosmic braking system at work within me at the time, but I desired to somehow push through my littleness.  If we could invent light bulbs and space stations, why could we not research our way forward to this?  It was such a good dream.  Though the message we were given was that healing and love would need to precede any of the spectacular outcomes we envisioned, I was impatient, and I was pained at times by the handicaps of my own shortcomings.

I could see no real path forward, and the effort fell apart, but I decided to take the medicine.  I realized I would need to be free of projecting my wholeness onto specific forms, free of needing specific outcomes, and that what I needed above all else was to become a reservoir of peace and contentment with however life arrived.  In other words, I could apply this feeling of possibility to all that has already arisen, and thereby eliminate the gap.  What lies beyond the gap remains to be seen and experienced, but remains out of reach so long as one’s current field of experience is seen as broken.  What I think I understand deeply now is that the path to the new involves the transformation of our experience of what already is.

Removing the obstacles to one’s awareness of Love’s presence is the temporary purpose of life.  When the process is completed, it is no longer needed.  Rational or not, I accept this to be so, and I remain convinced of the validity of the feeling I have that beyond the embodiment of this realization there lies all sorts of beautiful possibilities.  Keely may have been a genius, or he may have been a crackpot.  We may never know definitively.  It doesn’t really matter at this point.  My path led to here…  I am pregnant with an idea of open-endedness I cannot shake, and I am protecting this child within me from the conclusions of history.  We whisper to one another at night, about all that we are becoming, and I find in each day emerging evidence of all that truly is.

      • “So far the story sounds rather like an impressionist, nineteenth century rendition of electrodynamics, in which electrons are bound to the nucleus of atoms by passing the electromagnetic force back and forth.”..

For those who see our existence as human beings here on earth as mere flesh and bone, then to view ourselves as energy, Microbes and molecules which vibrate within the frequencies we have each obtained in our present ‘space’ of existence. It can be hard to understand.. Keely obviously understood much more than was perceived at the time of his creativity.

And there in is the key… Perception of our reality.. We have been brought up within our awareness of the reality of this world by the teachings we have learnt via our upbringing and cultural beliefs..

It was not so long ago Scientists thought the world was flat, and we would sail over the edge.

If we were to turn back time to the 1600’s and tell the people of that time our world would one day communicate in an instant via the internet, phones etc and land and walk on the moon. They too would think we were crazy..

And yet there are also those of us here now who have this ‘Knowing’ who through their journey.. ( I sat in physical circle for over 10 years ) and have seen ectoplasm and hands manifest, plus voice boxes and hear voices long gone from this dimension that many would disbelieve.. Being a working platform medium within the spiritualist centres around the UK for 20 years I have had the privilege to bridge that ‘Gap’ .. HOW did I do that?? I can not explain it.. I just linked into that realm..

We all of us can do this, each of us can tap in via our ‘Intuitive’ mind.. The part which Modern day mankind has let slip behind.. For he now has forgone the right to use his intuition.. And instead rely upon others to tell him what to do, what to wear, what to watch, what to be.. How to act,.., and follow the herd so that he feels part of something..

That something that he is already so a part of and yet he cannot remember who he is..
He/She Mankind has forgotten how to use the power of LOVE, which is a Vibration which resonates at a higher frequency that that of Hate. For we have forgotten the abundance of the word love.. We limit it.. Our relationships are controlled.. His, Hers, Mine, Owned.. And we limit Love in our human terms not in the Universal frequency it true form is..

“What lies beyond the gap remains to be seen and experienced, but remains out of reach so long as one’s current field of experience is seen as broken.”
I agree Michael , you also then went onto say.. “ What I think I understand deeply now is that the path to the new involves the transformation of our experience of what already is.
Removing the obstacles to one’s awareness of Love’s presence is the temporary purpose of life.

We are here to remember… As we learn to Love..via our lack of it..This is why I feel compassion is showing up more and more as we awaken to the wrongs and disasters which teach us through experience to embrace one another

I have gone on far too long.. and could touch upon our multi-dimensional selves in parallel worlds.. but that is for another Terminator!

        Blessings your way Michael ..

        • Hi Sue,

You’ve not gone on too long at all, my friend! Thank you for offering your voice to this movement into the new… Despite having this feeling of endless possibility from time to time, and writing a blog post such as I have here, I find I have to keep the day-to-day simple, and just focus on trusting, allowing, loving, etc. Just with what is right in front of me. I think some people are like the Olympic athletes of intuitive sensitivity– they are naturally gifted this way– and some of us have to continue bumbling along with nothing but a blunt knowing and the heart’s compass. But even that feels so true and good. I’m wandering in this wilderness, trying to hold to the compass’ direction, urged onward by the deep-seated feeling that goodness and love are the ultimate forces… Keely did think of everything as vibration, and began his research in the field of sound and acoustics…

Anyway, I hope we’re remembering. We are remembering. I’ve remembered a lot and it makes me want to remember more…!

          Blessings to you, too–

  1. Very deep Michael and not easy to explain with words from our human mind about the truth of all that is… About love as the source of all and how we can only perceive a tiny part of all potential that is available to experience… Yet we feel and know that we are so much more… In fact we are all… Yes both crazy and

      • Hi Barbara,

I like what you wrote here about the innocent way we explore the unknown. It truly is that much more enjoyable to just go along for the ride than to try and be in charge of the destination. I think that is another way of saying what I was trying to say here. We just have that sensations sometimes, don’t we, that the tour bus could at any time make a turn into uncharted territories… Glad to be along for the ride with you!

  3. I certainly do not think you are crazy in the least Michael; you may be pregnant, yet not crazy. I too have the conviction that we each of us know more than we know, which is perhaps another way of putting it, and which makes even Donald Rumsfeld’s philosophising seem obvious. What do we know that we think we do not know? You may call it love, others freedom, some peace, and some God; I call it contentedness. There is some influence at work, some sway acting upon us, yet which rational thought blocks or prohibits. The mind evolved to think within a paradigm of subject and object, a dichotomy that it cannot escape in perception, conception, or thought itself. At the same time, people down through time have spoken of what by consensus they may have agreed to have been a unicity of sorts, an apprehending of the world which by some un-specifiable means leapfrogs the dualistic paradigm and sets a horizon-less attitude upon all appearances. They speak of this leap as bringing with it an attendant peace, or love, or reposefulness; yet they never can describe it, because they do not know it as conventional knowledge. It cannot be memorised in neural representation; it cannot be made into facsimiles or images of any kind. And yet it is intimate and felt as home, that home we had been estranged from and which by other words was that which we knew though never before recognised. That was because it could not be re-cognised, re-membered, or re-presented. It is not a duplicate of anything; it is authentic and original, and it is what is already born inside you.

    • Oh, Hariod–

You cracked me up with Rumsfeld reference. We joke around about that from time to time at work, when we’re asked by clients what unexpected events might occur on projects that involve several years of time and the work of several hundred people from fifty or more organizations. Well, you’ve got your known unknowns, your unknown knowns, and then your unknown unknowns… and we can advise you on none of them… 🙂

And then your response here bowled me over… I loved every bit of this composition, Hariod. It filled me with a sense of peace and warmth, and I felt like the whole of your book sunk a little deeper into my heart in reading this. I do like your conception of the sway of contentedness, as it is indeed some movement through us, as us, authentic and original. There is nothing more to add to this, but simply to savor it. What else is needed but this?

I’m uncertain as to how you arrived at such a state reading this particular piece, but the means and the details are superfluous… I’m so happy to hear and to witness this opening, through however narrow an electronic lens. Any moment and any circumstance is an appropriate one for the dissolution of our resistance, and the opening of the heart… You are a brilliance I’m grateful to have encountered…

  5. Thanks for sharing this, Michael. I have never heard of the Keely experiments before. Interesting.
I have had enough experiences of my own of so many weird synchronicities and fulfillments of wishes in a very unlikely way that I think that there is a very powerful orchestrating force behind the scenes.
I have read many stories where physical laws seem not to apply. The catholic church has some levitatijg saints.
In the book The Holographic Universe by Michael Talbot, there are many stories that served to shake my scientific world view.
And I can also relate to the point that if one wants a result too badly then it is not going to work.
I wish you a peaceful and miraculous weekend,

Yes! These types of experiences all hint at the realization that what we see and witness is but the tip of an inexplicable iceberg of possibility. I think I read the Holographic Universe a long time ago, but I don’t remember it or those stories specifically, but I sense we’ve all encountered these snippets of story and experience that, if one is willing, speak of all that is beyond our finite knowing. Thank you for sharing your thoughts here!

I hope you have a beautiful weekend as well–

"love can awaken relationship, causing new circuits to form in the natural world through which harmonizing forces will flow." I find this idea totally intoxicating, and totally believable, not remotely crazy, just the way it is. I too feel that beyond the embodiment of love there are infinite possibilities. Even when we don't know it there are infinite possibilities. Like you, the feeling is unshakable.

  8. Hi Michael,
I’m so happy to read this post as it is very timely for me. I feel I am on the brink of something quite miraculous. It’s like it surrounds me and every day appears to come closer. I know that the more I open myself to love and forgiveness, the closer I bring this energy to me. I have no idea what it is, or how it will manifest in my life, but I know deep down I KNOW what it is. Hariod and I just had a similar discussion on her blog and her responses to me were so wonderful. Thank you for your amazingly beautiful spirit. You always touch my soul! ❤

    • Hi Lorrie,

When I read the first two lines of your comment, I thought: maybe we’re always on the brink of something quite miraculous. It’s not like we get one miracle and that’s it…! But I know what you mean. They grow inside of us, nurture us, nudge us into greater depths of ourselves… And sometimes they seem to be the culmination of an entire life of patient willingness, while in others the moments of grace just fall from the sky. In a way this feeling is like being in a forest of perpetually blooming trees and flowers, all on various cycles and rhythms, and the sky full of falling blossoms…

      Wishing you a miraculous unfolding…

      Peace!

I am affected to my spirit every single time there is a connection between us. You speak with a depth of knowledge that is awesome. • Hi Lorrie,

Thank you very much… I’m just sitting here, savoring this… You know, we help each other in these interactions because it is helpful to the point of being healing for me to discover that there are these parts of me that make a difference to others. And this difference, when it is made between any of us, is really a shared glimpse at the identity we share– as if for an instant we look together upon the beautiful wholeness of which we are all apart. We glimpse our brotherhood and sisterhood. Differences dissolve into a joyous unity that ennobles our distinctions. I have some vestiges of brokenness, uncertainty and the like within me that nag from time to time– some resistance yet to be let go, some pain still carried, and in these moments of connection it is as if we reach across one another’s barriers, not letting the other slip away…

          Much Gratitude

  9. Inspired by this post and Lorrie’s comment, I feel that as a species, and as individuals, we are all on the brink of something miraculous. It might not all come at once though, like my understanding of this brilliant post, Michael. I get bits and pieces of it. If we try too hard, in our usual way of grasping, it escapes us. Its like when I’m looking for something, and desperate to find it, the thing eludes me until I relax. And as I allow myself to be open, the little miracles come.

    • Hi Joanne,

Thank you for your note and your thoughts. I would tend to agree with you, especially about the effects of trying too hard. It is a paradox, but an important one to understand. We can’t make certain things happen, and yet all of our making tends to be about how we want the outcome to look. Despite a starting point that is only a pure feeling, we end up latching onto an afterimage of the feeling, and trying to actualize that. And yet we do feel, don’t we, that a greater ability to express these feelings truly, in manifest form, is possible. And the Word was made flesh…!

      Peace!
